Any new corps members willing to participate in a research study conducted by three TFA alumnae?

Attention current TFA corps members:

Three Teach For America alumnae need your help with some research!

My name is Marialena Rivera, and I am currently a PhD student at the University of California – Berkeley’s Graduate School of Education as well as a TFA alumna (NYC ’07). I am working as a graduate student researcher on a study of TFA with two UC Berkeley professors, Janelle Scott and Tina Trujillo, TFA alumnae from the 90s. We are currently interviewing current corps members and are trying to include perspectives from across TFA regions.

Would you be interested in participating in a 45-60 minute phone or in-person interview for the study?

The study is an examination of participants’ career paths and their engagement in public education. We’re asking three main questions:

(1) Why do aspiring corps members wish to join the organization?

(2) What are current and alumni corps members’ career goals and trajectories?

(3) What are current and alumni corps members’ positions on issues related to educational leadership, reform, and policy?

In order to answer these questions, we’re interviewing people about their experiences in TFA and beyond. We’re also attending meetings, recruitment sessions, related events, etc., and eventually surveying folks. The interviews are completely confidential – nothing you say can be traced back to you or your work or anything like that.  We can also throw in a $10 Amazon gift card as a thank you for participating.

If you’re interested, please email [email protected] with a few dates and times over the next few weeks that you are available.  Let me know if you have any questions, and I can send you some more information.

Thanks so much!  We sincerely appreciate your participation.

This sounds fun. However, I would imagine that pulling respondents from here will probably bias the sample more towards TFA/reform ambivalence. But I’m glad a study like this is being done.

Best of luck — this seems like an important study!

  3. Hi, I’m a alumn from the Chilean partner of TFA -Enseña Chile- and I think it would be very interesting to connect your research with what is going on in other countries.
